Their physical and mental health suffers. With safe routes to school, comes a special initiative that helps create an environment, mobility and sustainable societies.

To encourage the use of the bicycle or to walk in safety on routes to and from school, the Emilia-Romagna initiated a project that produces in nine cities capital infrastructure choices and designed together with schools and citizens.

The projects include:

• the creation or development safe cycle lanes and pedestrian zones;

• the creation of zones to 30 miles per hour;

• the reconstruction of road signs;

• the redevelopment of the area around schools;

• workshops and meetings to arrange safe travel to school. "
